Table 1.

Effect of repeated administration of amphetamine on neuronal nitric oxide synthase immunoreactivity in the rat prefrontal cortex and nucleus accumbens

Number of nitric oxide synthase-positive neurons
Region Vehicle-treated (n = 4) Amphetamine-treated (n = 4)
Prefrontal cortex 209  ± 24 117  ± 12; *p < 0.05
Nucleus accumbens 162  ± 16 54  ± 10; *p < 0.005

The number of nitric oxide synthase-positive neurons was counted in 60-μm-thick sections in a designated area (1 × 1 mm) within these brain regions (at the M-L coordinates: 1.4 mm and 2.0 mm lateral to the sagittal suture; Paxinos and Watson, 1986) in rats at 14 d after withdrawal from amphetamine. *Student's t test compared to vehicle-treated control.
