Figure 6.

Expression of the nuclear proliferation marker Ki67. (A–D): Tissue sections stained with anti-Ki67 antibody detected proliferating cells in stroke-affected hemispheres. Ki67-positive nuclei were visualized by horseradish peroxidase 3,3′-diaminobenzidine staining (red arrows). Sections were digitized with ×4 (A) and ×40 (B–D) microscope objectives. For each animal, three coronal sections, 2 mm apart, were used for quantitative analysis performed on ×40 digital images by counting the numbers of Ki67-positive cells within the ischemic core area spanning the SVZ (C), CC (B), and Str (D). (E): Significantly higher numbers of proliferating cells were observed in cell-treated animals compared with control animals. Magnification, ×4 (A) and ×40 (B–D). Scale bars = 100 μm. Graph shows mean ± SD. *, p < .05. Abbreviations: CC, corpus callosum; EPC, endothelial progenitor cell; Str, striatum; SVZ, subventricular zone.
