Hypothetical model for the mechanism of serotonin signaling. Serotonin (5-HT) gets transported into the cell via serotonin transporter (SERT). 5-HT then targets a yet unknown molecule to activate the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), which in turn promote protein carbonylation and subsequent biologic actions. Monoamine oxidase A (MAO-A) mainly regulates intracellular 5-HT concentration, while this enzyme also produces H2O2.
