LuCaP 136-luc growth is androgen-dependent as measured by bioluminescence. Growth of LuCaP 136-luc intratibial tumors in nude mice (n = 20) measured by average luminescence units (Radiance, p/sec/cm2/sr) over time. p, photons, sr, surface radiance. Data points represent mean ± SD. On day 0, a testosterone pellet was inserted and 5 × 105 LuCaP 136-luc cells were inoculated into right tibiae. On day 16 after cancer cell inoculation, mice were randomized into 3 groups. One group was castrated and the testosterone pellet was excised. The second group had testosterone pellets excised only without castration. The third group was sham-operated, and testosterone pellets were left intact. *p < 0.05, two-way ANOVA (luminescence signal comparison between sham-operated and castrated mice)
