Overview of the structural features of connexins (CXs) to form gap junctions [71–73]. The folding of connexins is shown in a ribbon representation based on the crystal structure of the human CX26 (PDB code: 2ZW3) and cryo-EM structure of the human CX46 (PDB code: 6MHQ) gap junctions. The hexametric CX26s in the open state have hemichannel activity, and the intercellular communication results from assembling twelve connexin subunits to connect neighboring cells.
